About Us

What is our purpose?

The woman who decides to abort her child usually does so because she feels she has no choice - parents, boyfriend, peers or even husband have threatened to withdraw their support. The Gabriel Project tries to provide the needed emotional, physical and spiritual support during pregnancy and after the birth of the baby as long as help is needed. Relationships are established with members of the church to bring new hope and comfort to women who are alone. Women we help include women who have chosen to put their baby up for adoption.

What is our mission statement?

The Gabriel Project is committed to:

Offering hope and support to mothers and fathers who have made the choice for Life;
Witnessing to the good news of God’s salvation through our words and actions;
Strengthening families so children can grow in a happy and healthy home;
Growing in our spiritual lives by responding to God’s will for us;
Providing an example to our children of God’s call to love and serve others.

Why is it called the Gabriel Project?

The name is taken from the Gospel of Luke. The Angel Gabriel's message is "Fear not - for God is with you. Nothing is impossible with God." Annunciation

Where and when did the Gabriel Project start?

The Gabriel Project started over 25 years ago at a parish in Houston, Texas. The pastor put a sign out in front of his church offering help to any woman facing a crisis pregnancy. Since then, it has spread to more than a dozen states and has become a national movement.

The Gabriel Project began at St. Michael's in January 1999. It has helped to connect the Church community with mothers in need in a very concrete way. Since it began, our church has helped over 20 mothers. In Raleigh, St. Raphael's, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Luke's, St. Francis and St. Catherine's have started this ministry. In Wilmington, five parishes are combining their efforts in this ministry. It is eucumenical in nature and brings churches together to reach out to mothers of all faiths. We are hoping many other denominations will join in the momentum.

Where do referrals come from?

Our referrals come from:

Catholic Social Ministries,
our Pastors,
direct calls to the Church,
other church members,
the Gabriel Project brochure, posters and signs.

When the client calls the Birthchoice hotline, their needs are assessed and they are either invited in to take a pregnancy test and receive counseling, or put in contact with the Gabriel Project volunteers. The Gabriel Project provides the long term help. We seek to save innocent babies and help their mothers.

Donations

If you would like to make a donation of new or gently used baby items (cribs, car seats, bouncy seats, pack & plays, high chairs, strollers, infant clothes up to size 2T, baby towels, baby blankets or maternity clothes) please contact Julie von Hafen @ 372-7276 (julievonhafen@yahoo.com).

** We are also constantly in need of baby diapers or gift cards to purchase them if you'd like to do something special for a baby.**
